The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) was awarded a two-year $488,598 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for a pilot project entitled

"Public Reporting and Dynamic Access: Changing Regional Environmental Health of South Florida's Everglades Ecosystem"

This award has been made possible through the EPA's EMPACT Program. The grant was applied for in April 1999, award notice was received in October of 1999, and the grant agreement was executed in February 2000. There are 5 main objectives to the grant:

1. Build a Data Mart to house the relevant data,
2. Design/Develop the Web Interface,
3. Develop an Environmental Reference Source,
4. Provide Additional Visualization and Graphics,
5. Provide Coordinated Education and Training.

The most significant product of this project is the web site that will provide a user interface to track the success of Everglades restoration projects and the general health of Florida's ecosystems.

In August, 2000, SFWMD contracted with the Florida Center for Environmental Studies to facilitate stakeholder involvement as part of the education and training objective. In October 2000 we contracted for the development of the data base to support the web site. In November 2000 we contracted for development of the web interface. Additional funding through the grant and the District is available in FY02 to continue to fulfill the remaining grant obligations.
